My Students
My school attracts students from across all neighborhoods in Philadelphia. We strive to create a safe space in which our young people feel part of a family, not just a student body.
Our kids are eager to learn and are hungry for knowledge.
In social studies, they learn about social justice and begin to understand the systemic barriers to it, which, unfortunately, many of them have already felt in various ways. Learning about the history of social justice gives them a chance to become agents of change for their future.
My Project
Social justice doesn't just happen. Sources of institutional oppression need identified. Language needs decoded. Connections need to be made. History needs revisited.
Studying historical fiction through a social justice lens gives students an opportunity to connect personally with the issues that are paramount to their understanding of the world in which they live.
Current events don't happen in isolation, they occur on a historical continuum. For students to critically think through the complex and provocative issues of 2018, they need to understand the past.
Utilizing fiction gives students an opportunity to safely make personal connections to history through the experience of the characters. Your donation to a class set of "Witness," by Karen Hesse, will help my students understand the historical roots of anti-semitism and racism in the United States as perpetuated by hate groups such at the KKK.
