My Students

Imagine coming to a new country with your family and building a wonderful life with people who look like you and speak like you. Now imagine starting school and being spoken to in a different language all day. We have a very large immigrant and migrant population at our school. The majority of my class are English language learners and are trying to master 2 languages at once!

As a teacher at a low income, majority ELL school, my students are faced with challenges inside and outside the school building each and every day.

Some of them have parents who do not know any English, others have parents who are students themselves. All of my students receive free lunch at the school due to their socioeconomic background. I believe that their parents' socioeconomic status, participation in their life, race, etc. - none of that should determine the type of education they receive and the access to supplies that they have.

My Project

Being able to hear themselves on the whisper phones will help students to critique themselves and become more fluent readers and hopefully read with better expression.

Students love to use “cool” materials and often do not even realize that they are working because they see it as fun.

And teachers love it too because kids will ask to do it over and over. Hopefully these whisper phones will be that cool tool for them!

My students need access to fluency passages of varying levels as some students are well below grade level and some are reading well above grade level.
