Books can offer a safe retreat for everyday trials for my kids. They may need to connect with books that capture their imaginations to help them escape from the difficulties they face every day. They also need help with fluency and reading expression, and a listening center can meet those needs.
My school is in a small town.
While we have resources available, they can be very limited.
My school is filled with students who are eager to learn and need help in finding success. Students need opportunities to explore and find the joy in reading. The teachers in my school provide most of the supplies and extras for our students. Our school provides an education to high poverty levels and wants every tool available to ensure the success of our students.
My Project
My students will use the listening center on a daily basis to listen to books and work on their reading fluency and expression. They will listen to books that will examine different topics across the content areas. Students will also have the opportunity to read for pleasure. The listening center and books will allow my students to enjoy reading and learn from books they will read, that currently they may not be able to because of text complexity.
Hearing a book read on tape helps students see how the words on the page can come alive in a fluid, expressive way. It helps them focus on the sounds of words read without interruption and provides a model of fluent reading. Audio books also give an important introduction to listening, a skill that they must master in order to learn to read.
Many books on tape have interesting sound effects, music, and multiple narrators that are especially motivating and fun for young children.
My students will improve their reading levels, reading fluency, and increase their love of reading.
My classroom setting will be greatly enhanced by having a listening center with books that cover all of the content areas, as well as some books that are simply for pleasure. I plan to incorporate the Daily 5 into my classroom to increase literacy, including vocabulary as well. One of the stations will be the listening station.
