Help me give my students intrinsic motivation to increase their reading with these sight word journals, magnetic teaching charts, dry erase markers and erasers.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
I work in an inner city school, and most of my students are at least one year behind grade level. To make matters worse, most of my students don't come to school with the basic materials that they need to be prepared. Examples of the materials I am talking about are backpacks, pencils, folders and notebooks. As their teacher, I have a huge, and expensive, task at hand.
With every student that enters my classroom, I hold a great deal of responsibility.
Not only do I have to make sure that they receive the best quality education I am capable of giving them, but I also have to supply them with materials; if I don't they, won't have them - simple as that!
My Project
Many of my students are so behind grade level that they lack motivation because of their frustration. I want to make their centers more engaging, less intimidating and more personalized. The students having their own daily sight word journals with their name on it would be a great start to building their reading fluency. In addition, having guided reading with the magnetic teaching charts would help make the different comprehension strategies easier to understand; having the students participate in the lesson by writing their own responses on dry erase boards with the markers and their own erasers will also increase engagement.
