My school is a unique school in that we have 840 K-2 (Kindergarten, first and second grade) students in one building. We are the only primary building in our district. Since our community is changing, how we reach out to families needs to change. Literacy learning is paramount since it lays the foundation for all other learning. Many of my students come from low-income households. Despite their many challenges, my students always come to school with smiles on their faces and are eager to learn new things!
It is essential that our K-2 students master foundational literacy skills.
We want to give students access to books they love and to create positive experiences with reading that will hook them to become the lifelong readers we want them to be. Using child friendly methods, we need to meet them where they are at with instructional practices.
My Project
My students have access to high-quality books which they really enjoy. To provide a sense of novelty to their daily reading experiences, I am seeking some child friendly tools to encourage the love of reading. "Reading fingers" are plastic martian fingers which students put on the end of their fingers to help them point to the words while they read. They are most beneficial for our emergent readers who are just learning to match their verbal and written words 1:1. They are also super goofy and fun!
"Flash light Friday finger lights" are another thing that can make reading even more exciting.
These little finger lights can be reserved for special times when teachers turn the lights down or off. Students can read by these mini flashlights which are rubber banded to students' pointer fingers. This is a huge hit with students since it is unusual and can be a fun way to make Fridays a celebration of learning.
These materials would be made available to every Dual Language student within my building in grades K-2.
