This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
"The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you'll go." ~ Dr. Seuss.
My fifth grade students and I are working towards a destination and reading will take us there.
My reading explorers possess bright and inquisitive minds with large personalities.
The true difference between my students and most other students within this country lies in their access to opportunity. My students hail from a low-income community where families are hard-pressed to provide their children with what they need. Just two years ago we were an "F" school, but with the mighty persistence of students and a dedicated school community we are now a "C" school. Our school is quickly rising up and serving as a model for the district by proving that students can succeed regardless of where they come from. My students are ready to show the world what they're made of and the sky's the limit.
My Project
My fifth graders are ready to participate in the "One Million Word Campaign", but they currently have half empty shelves as their classroom library. They will need leveled books that will meet each of their individual needs. Each student will use their independent reading level to choose books to read during differentiated instruction and silent reading time. Through differentiated texts my students will sharpen their reading skills and will have a wide array of books to choose from to match their unique interests. Furthermore, my students will also gain valuable technology literacy skills with the introduction of laptops to our classroom. Most of my students do not have computers at home and we have very few computers in my classroom. The warranties will ensure that the laptops remain operational.
A lack of access to resources should never be an excuse for the quality of education our children receive.
Please help my fifth graders excel by granting them the resources they need and deserve. We believe that reading will take us places. Will you be a part of our journey?
