My students need exposure to a variety of texts, including fiction and non-fiction, which will be provided through subscriptions to both Storyworks Jr. and Scholastic News.
I teach 2nd grade in a Tampa school that is very diverse. I have the opportunity to work with students from many different cultures, different socio-economic levels and different achievement tiers. My students are inquisitive and excited learners. Some of them are strong readers and writers while others are strong mathematicians and scientists. I want to provide text that will interest all of my students throughout the year and help them become the best readers they can be!
"Reading gives us someplace to go when we have to stay where we are." Mason Cooley
Some of my students have been fortunate enough to go on family outings and trips and learned about people and places outside of their community, but others have not been lucky enough to have that opportunity. Through reading both fiction and non-fiction texts, my students will reap the benefits of learning about things beyond what happens in their day-to-day lives. I want to provide literature experiences that will challenge their inquisitive minds and hopefully help them dream of what their futures could hold.
My Project
My students will dive into reading fiction and non-fiction texts through Scholastic's classroom magazines Storyworks Jr. and Scholastic News. Storyworks Jr. will present my students with a variety of fiction texts and authors and challenge them to read and understand texts at or above their reading level. Scholastic News will help my students learn information about people, places and animals through non-fiction text. It will expand their thinking and minds beyond the boundaries of their ethnicity, socio-economic status and their communities.
"The more that you read, the more things you will know, the more that you learn, the more places you'll go." Dr. Seuss
Through exposure to these resources, my students will be provided with the opportunity to not only increase their reading level, but will also be challenged to think beyond their immediate situation, think of the possibilities, and dream of what incredible opportunities their futures can hold!
