My Students

We have a diverse population of students including Native American, African American and Hispanic.

We are an alternative school and offer the only Teenage Pregnancy Program in the district.

Teen moms attend school while their babies are in the nursery on campus. We offer teen parenting classes for both the mothers and fathers and a "Beat The Odds" ceremony when they graduate to celebrate their success.

Students come to us because we are alternative, offering a setting where they can thrive even though they didn't thrive at their previous school.

My Project

I can't wait to offer my Read 180 students some new reading materials! "House on Mango Street" is a great novel to capture the attention of my high school students. My Hispanic students will relate to the beautifully written stories by Sandra Cisneros.

Each class is setting a new reading goal this semester and this novel will keep them motivated!

Reading 20 minutes a day is our class goal and this is the perfect novel as it is written from the perspective of teenage Latina, Esperanza Cordero.

These books will make a difference to my students as they need to read a book that they can relate to, and Cisnero's Puerto-Rican background is perfect!
