My students coming in this year are struggling learners, they come from poverty stricken families with little to no educational background beyond high school. My students need a lot of classroom management and higher expectations set for them. I have a higher ratio of special needs students this year. I am ready for the new year and excited for the challenge. I will have some students who have autism this year. The teachers from kindergarten struggled with the students and have expressed a concern of maturity. As a first grade teacher i will have my work cut out for me to get my students to become readers in the year I have them and catch them up from a year of just trying to learn how to be a part of a learning community. I do not label my students nor do I give them a prejudged image of who they are. Once they come into my classroom they are getting a fresh start and chance to be whoever they want to be. As the teacher I want them to see a role model for how to be a successful learner.
My Project
I have requested chart paper and a daily schedule chart to post in the classroom to help my first graders to see what we are learning and learn our daily routine by visualizing it.
This year I have some struggling learners, so I am requesting some book bags and a rack to store them so we can have leveled books for them to choose from and have a fun way to find those books.
My students will enjoy learning sight words in a small group setting using these sight word practice sheets for extra help. Thank you for looking at our project.
