Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are engaged and thoughtful honors sophomores and juniors within a large public high school in Chicago. They are amazing! Students travel all over the southwest side of Chicago to attend our high school. They come to school ready to learn, to explore literature and to grapple with complex issues within humanity and society.

As a teacher in a low-income/high poverty neighborhood in Chicago, I am constantly struggling to provide my students with texts that are challenging and engaging to build reading skills in a meaningful way.

They are ready to be challenged.

My Project

Help students with a class set of the novel Long Way Down by Jason Reynolds. On a weekly basis, I see students tear through their independent reading books; mostly young adult books that touch on subjects connected to their lives. This book will act as a shared classroom novel in that same vein. Long Way Down deals with themes common to many of my students in their daily reality--including gun violence and its effects.

With a male teenage protagonist and an accessible and engaging style, I am confident that my students will actively read and then actively discuss, debate, think and write.
