My Students

My students come from many different countries across the globe. They speak multiple languages and have unique traditions and practices that I love to learn about from them first hand. Their experiences are both incredible and harrowing, and yet we all come together in the same classroom to find comfort, education, a positive environment, and unique experiences.

What makes these students so special is that they all have something to teach each other, and they always have something to teach me.

Each year, I learn a great deal about my students and about the experiences they've had and the places they've been. In a world where new technology and traditional education is always at our fingertips, it's meaningful for me as a teacher to expose my students to special opportunities, unique trips, and a comfortable setting where learning is evident and expected, and students will remain engaged so that we can try new things and always remain successful!

My Project

This year I have many students who only speak Spanish or Portuguese and as we enhance our English language skills they will also be learning the English language for the first time. Much of our work all year will be in English to immerse them in the language with the help of multiple teachers in our classroom working together. However, for our Accountable Independent Reading time, they should read in their native language to build background knowledge, fluency, vocabulary, and enjoyment while reading. For that reason, my classroom library needs more books for fluent Spanish speakers! This project requests many popular and famous books in Spanish.

I learned today that many of my students prefer to read manga, anime, and graphic novels, so this project also allows me to add books from those genres to meet their needs and engage their interests.

By adding more pleasing books both in different languages and in students' interest areas, we are promoting a love for reading which in turn allows the students to gain more knowledge and skills and become better readers! The manga, anime, and graphic novels have been specifically requested by students, and the books about video games and gamers were also added to the list based on students' hobbies. All of the books in this project will increase student learning outcomes, promote a love for reading and learning, develop stronger fluency and language skills, increase vocabulary and background knowledge, and increase student success!
