The young students in our urban school are eager to learn how to read. Many of our kindergarten students start at our school with no previous education, no literacy knowledge and limited language skills.
Our school serves over 500 preK - 4th grade students.
In Kindergarten alone last year, 83% of the students were designated as high needs by the department of education and 64% were designated as economically disadvantaged. We also have a high trauma population. Despite the many obstacles our students face, most of them come to school eager to learn. Our teachers are extremely dedicated and work endlessly to overcome the obstacles that come from working with a high needs population in a large, urban public school district.
My Project
These phonemic awareness learning centers will be used to build phonemic awareness skills in our struggling readers. Every year we have kindergarten and first grade students who fail to progress beyond the pre-emergent reading level. We have tried many different interventions, but with little success. Another school in our district did a case study with a similar population of students and they found that building phonemic skills was the missing component for many of their struggling, young readers. We would like to replicate the success of other schools by providing a phonemic awareness intervention to our pre-emergent readers.
The National Reading Panel found that phonemic awareness instruction has a significant effect on reading and spelling performance.
We are hoping to use this kit to provide a phonemic awareness intervention to our struggling, pre-emergent readers. The phonemic awareness instant learning centers will be an integral part of the intervention that we provide. This kit provides centers to target six different phonemic awareness skills so teachers will be able to target students' specific areas of need. These centers will provide students with the activities and materials that they need to build their phonemic awareness in a fun and systematic way.
