This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
The vast majority of my students come from a very poor socioeconomic background. We are a Title One school with over ninety percent of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch. Our demographics consist of eighty-nine percent African-American, ten percent Caucasian and one percent other. Students live in a community that has the lowest employment rates in the state.
Many do not have the basic tools they need to be successful in the today's modern society, mainly due to the poor socioeconomic conditions they face on a daily basis.
My students need these materials to start the year off right.
My Project
The reading materials will help students enhance their reading abilities through an independent remediation center and small group teacher-guided instruction. These reading materials will allow for more differentiation according to the students' reading performance levels. The independent remediation center is where students practice and self-monitor their reading progress. This will allow the students to read and develop at their own pace.
With these new reading materials and manipulatives, my students will be able to choose from a variety of reading resources such as headphones, short passages and Hot Dots that will allow them to read independently at their own performance level.
These resources will aide my students in improving their comprehension skills, increasing their performance levels and fostering their love for reading.
