Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My high school students are special in that they want to be future educators. They see the need to help younger kids. They have the opportunity to work in the classroom with students who are in elementary schools.
Teachers come in all different ages.
My students with their desire to be future educators will make the difference in the lives of younger children. Through opportunities in the classroom, both students will be getting help. The high school student growing in their knowledge and the elementary school students in their gains in the classroom because of the high school mentor.
My Project
My high school students, aka mentors, have selected younger students who are struggling readers. They will meet with them weekly to read. Initially the mentor will read the material, followed by the elementary student reading along. The goal is that each week the elementary student will enhance their reading skill to take home the select reading material to show their developing skill. The Ziplock bags are needed to hold all the reading supplies.
Through the design studio the mentor will create incentives to give to their mentee.
This incentive could be a bookmark, or shape that is important to the mentee. Hopping this positive reinforcement will encourage the mentee to continue to read and grow in their skill of reading. All mentees are at least a half grade level behind but most are over an entire grade level behind.
