My students need a monthly subscription to Scholastic's SCOPE magazine, which I will use to instruct close reading of informational texts. Scope combines thrilling, complex articles with in-depth support materials to help with my teaching.
My 6th grade students are fascinated with current events and the world around them! It is so fun to have conversations with them about real-life events, because they ask so many questions, and truly are interested in learning.
Reading news and magazine articles critically and identifying bias is such an important skill.
I want my students to be able to not only read complex informational texts, but analyze and apply the skills we are learning in class to what they are reading. Many colleges have discovered that incoming freshman may be able to compute a math problem or analyze a short story but they can’t read a complex non-fiction text or write a well-researched essay. In fact, ACT researchers have been quoted as saying, “The clearest differentiator in reading between students who are college ready and students who are not is the ability to comprehend complex texts.”
My Project
Scope Magazine combines thrilling, complex texts with in-depth support materials to build the skills required by today’s rigorous ELA standards. The subscription is for 9 issues, so it will provide us with exceptional texts in a wide range of genres, including informational and narrative nonfiction, original fiction, drama, and paired texts. It also has an online component with dazzling videos, and alternate reading levels. Scope isn’t just a magazine. It's a complete print and online ELA resource to help students think critically.
Scope is a great tool at drawing the interest of teens who are having a hard time with reading comprehension, as well as those who may not have a high interest in reading.
It's packaged to look like many of the popular teen magazines, but many articles and accompanying questions are similar to what we might see on high stakes testing.
