My Students
I am a fifth Grade Reading and ELA teacher who works in one of the lowest social economic elementary schools in the district. Over ninety-six percent of our children receive free or reduced price lunch. As a result, a majority of my students do not have access to reading materials outside of school.
My students are hardworking and talented scholars who need the extra push to shine.
I am trying to instill a love of reading and language in my two classes so they can build up their basis of education. The faculty and staff in our school try to find the leader in each of our students. Every child can make it, if the child has a fair chance.
My Project
The idea I am trying to incorporate is a reading corner filled with bean bags, mood lighting and great reads. I would like my classes to have the opportunity to enjoy what they're learning, and feel confident in their beginning stages of language.
As I enter my first year of teaching, I find that many of my students lack reading confidence.
It's a struggle they've faced the minute they fall behind in curriculum. As my teacher did for me, I hope to provide an active library for my class, suited with privacy chairs, bouncy yoga balls for hyperactive students and moving library carts.
