Our school has a high population of low-income students that have problems at home that are on their minds instead of what is going on at school. Each one of my students was impacted by Hurricane Harvey in some way. Hurricane Harvey was a tragedy that no child should have to experience. Many of these students have challenges in and out of the classroom. My main focus is to create a safe and fun learning environment that inspires students to learn all that they can.
My Project
Small group instruction is vital for effective teaching. I use small group instruction with my students on a daily basis to remediate or enhance their reading skills. I have students on all different levels for their reading and comprehension skills. Small group instruction helps me find where my students’ gaps are and allows me to provide instruction on their individual level to bring them up to where they should be. The reading games and activities that I have chosen will address a variety of skills that we learn about in fourth grade. Some of the activities are below grade level, to help address students who may be behind, and some are above grade level, to extend knowledge for those students who are at grade level or above.
The activities are file folder games that are self checking, but can also be used with me at my table so that I can monitor the understanding of the students.
The inflatable discs will be used in chairs for students who are able to focus better when they are able to move and fidget without being a distraction to the rest of the class.
