Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students live in a high-poverty neighborhood in south Philadelphia. We are an extremely diverse group: we speak 7 different languages at home and are from many different countries! We love reading and writing, but often struggle to bring more than a pencil to school. (And sometimes not even that.)
My students are fantastic readers and writers, but we need to replenish our high-interest books.
With 90 students borrowing from a classroom library, the most popular titles often go missing.
My Project
My students LOVE graphic novels--so much, that the collections I bought a few years ago have mostly disappeared into students' homes or fallen apart from 90 students borrowing the same 10 titles over and over again.
We need to refresh our class collection of graphic novels.
These books will help my students be engaged in their independent reading, as well as experience the joy of reading outside of our limited ELA class time. I want to get some additional copies of favorite books as well as some new titles that have come out in the last few years.
