Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I support students between the ages of 6 to 13 in an urban school. The students are amazing and bring a positive outlook every day to school. They are excited to learn and even though this school year has proven to be complex, the students are thrilled to be holding books.
My Project
I am a Special Education teacher who works with first through eighth grade students in the area of reading. I want to open the world of reading to them through dynamic texts they can connect with. Not only will these texts support their reading skills (fluency and comprehension), but they will be able to connect the texts to themselves and their lives. The texts were chosen based on their personal interests to increase engagement. We are going to start a collaborative book study, where students are allowed to pick the text and read the book with a peer. This will provide students the opportunity to not only pick a book they find interesting, but also work collaboratively with a peer while developing key reading skills.
