My wonderful students are from an urban area. They have chosen to attend our public charter school to be a part of a school whose mission emphasizes leadership, rhetoric, entrepreneurship, history, and debate in the classical model.
Our school receives one third of the funding of traditional public schools in our area of the state as a public charter school.
As a small start-up having just completed its fifth year, we often do not have the budget to be able to obtain materials to benefit our students. My students have chosen to take Latin as an elective. I want my first year students to be able to read accessible texts.
My Project
Offering Latin is an essential part of the classical mission here at our school. By supporting this project, you would be helping our students further their education by learning a classical language and reading classical literature.
Help my students read something substantial and build confidence in their ability to read Latin!
Students who learn Latin want to read more than short excerpts from classical texts: they want to read longer texts that are at their level. High school students also often think that short stories of the Jack and Jill variety are beneath them. The Comprehensible Classics series bridges the gap. Each classic is a novella that retells stories from Roman and Greek mythology. The vocabulary in these novellas is limited, allowing students to cement their understanding of the language and enjoy the story without the distraction of having to constantly leaf through a dictionary. Please help my students not only learn but also have fun reading classical mythology in a classical language!
