This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are English Language Learners in South Central Los Angeles. We are working hard every day to improve their English reading, writing, listening and speaking skills. They are highly motivated to pass the tests to reclassify and be fluent English speakers and readers! One strategy we used in my classroom last year was Reading Circles where each group read the same book. Students really enjoyed reading aloud to each other in their table groups. The Reading Circles transformed reading into a fun and social activity for my students.

My Project

My students are all English Language Learners. One successful strategy we used last year to improve their reading levels was Reading or Literature Circles. Everyone participated and enjoyed reading aloud and discussing their books in their small reading circles. Students’ Lexile reading levels increased by hundreds of points! Students were extremely proud of their improvement and progress towards meeting their reading goals. The books are so important to our Reading Circles. My students cannot afford to buy their own books and our school does not have funding for classroom books. With these books my students can read together and build positive experiences reading and talking about books!
