Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students come from high-poverty where 96% of the population is free or reduced lunch. Most of our families do not speak English and therefore find difficulty supporting their child in reading the English language. These books will bring math and reading to life for my students!

My students attend a free, public charter school.

The parents of my students do not always have the "know how" to get their child toward academic success, but they trust that we as a school will do our best to make that dream a reality. In 1st grade students learn a lot about how the world works and their role in the it. Through fun, colorful books, they will be able to understand and be excited to be a part of the world. They will learn math concepts of counting, adding, and measuring, why people in history were important, and how we can take care of our world. These books will give interest that my students may not otherwise acquire. Reading really can be brought to life through the right books and interest!

My Project

I am requesting books that will supplement their learning in the classroom. We start the year by learning about our communities and what our role in the world is. We also learn about social skills such as sharing, cleaning up, and being a good friend. In math through the year we learn how to count, skip count, add, subtract, and count and manage money. Many of the books I have requested include life and social skills that supplement the academic learning of the students. I firmly believe that both are essential components for the students to become knowledgeable and caring citizens in the world. I cannot wait to roll out all these books as resources to give them to entice and spur on more learning in their brains! Making learning exciting is what keep it going!

There are many correlations between reading levels and future success of students.

It is our goal that we each grow 1.5 years in reading and math this year, because of the academic deficit the students come to me with. I believe that these books will help us reach those goals and ultimately set them on a path to success and confidence throughout their education, careers, and lives! This all starts now, in the 1st grade!
