Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
"The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more you learn, the more places you'll go." — Dr. Seuss
My goal is to help my students make 2 years growth in one school year - and we're achieving just that by teaching standards based lessons on leveled literature! But I need more books!
I have the most incredibly motivated and delightful group of kids!
Each day I am excited to go to work - who says that nowadays? I can because my students inspire me! They are polite, hardworking, and dedicated. Although they come from a very challenging socioeconomic background, they all want to attend college someday. The students I teach ARE our leaders of the future, the only difference between our school and other schools, is that we don't have the financial resources that others enjoy. Their families recognize the importance of a good education and so they are extremely supportive of the school and teachers.
My Project
My students have DEVOURED books this year! In fact, the entire 5th grade (104 students) has read almost 8000 books! We need a variety of titles, genres, and levels in order to meet all of the students' needs. I teach by using the Common Core State Standards and applying the standards to leveled reading material. The students learn their lessons and then apply the skills to identify the standards within their LEVELED books. This allows for maximum exposure to the standards but also sets the students up for success because they are applying the skills at their individual reading level. So far it is working! The average growth on our assessments has been about 18 months in 6 months time!
I have a range of abilities within my 5th grade class.
I have students working on a middle school level and students who are working on a 1st grade level. Although our school library is growing and improving, it is imperative that I keep a well-stocked and leveled library in my classroom. I pride myself on providing a variety of titles, levels, and genres within my room, but I can always use more - especially nonfiction! The books I have requested would give the students even more to read!
