My student range from kindergarten through 6th grade and they are creative, smart, kind, and outstanding in a variety of individual ways. But two things stand out to me. The first is that they are extremely resourceful. The second is we have a diverse group of students who work, play, and help each other.
The small size of our community has created and opportunity for students from diverse backgrounds to build relationships, solve problems, and have fun together.
Looking at the statistics, we look like a community full of deficits, but the students use this as an opportunity to work together and create what they want out of what they have.
My Project
This fall our principal challenged all of the elementary staff to increase the students reading. I created a committee of students to come up with strategies for how to meet the reading challenge in my classroom. The student identified having a comfortable place, time, tracking progress, and celebrating small achievements as the elements needed to meet the principals challenge.
Everyone is helping the students implement the plan; the administration is making available the technology and space, the students are taking care of the bulletin board and celebration planning, and I am with your help providing the resources needed for what the students have envisioned.
