Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Imagine you are an English Language Learner, charged with the task of reading books and becoming fluent and proficient in English. However, you are consistently expected to read book after book. This is only the beginning of many challenges my students face on a daily basis.
My students mainly come from countries like the Dominican Republic and Puerto Rico.
They are currently at a Level 2 in English Language development, on a scale from 1-5. In other words, they are low readers. They have been placed in a class where they are expected to read several books, take comprehension quizzes on these books, and become more fluent in the English Language through computer-based software. My students are enthusiastic toward school, but they are consistently challenged on a daily basis because of their language barriers.
My Project
My goal is to create a reading center in my classroom where students can go and grab a book, relax, and enjoy what they are reading. I want this rug specifically because it shows a map of the United States of America with a landmark from each state. This is important to me because my students come from another part of the world. I want them to see all that the United States has to offer with this rug and hopefully inspire a more worldly view of the world.
To make this space feel homey, I've asked for three bean bag chairs for students to enjoy. Ever curled up by the fire with a book and a warm cup of coffee? Have you ever gotten "lost" in a book?. So much of reading is about getting comfortable and taking a trip into another world. I want this space to be a place where students can rewind and actually enjoy what they're doing. I want this to be a space where they can get lost in a book and forget about everything else that might be happening around them.
As it stands, my students are significantly below grade level in their reading ability.
They predominantly speak Spanish everywhere they go. To be productive members of our society in the future, they must learn to read and write in English. Help fund this project so students can get some enjoyment out of this challenging task they have in front of them!
