The heart of my classroom is my students. Every day I have the privilege of sneaking a peek into the future by working with future doctors, lawyers, presidents, artists, chefs, and homemakers. I get to work with tomorrows' legends on the baseball, soccer, and football fields, too!
My incredibly talented and smart students are in grades K-2, speak several languages, and represent the diversity in our country.
They speak English, Spanish, Arabic, Portuguese, Russian, German, and Chinese. Some of my students traveled on foot with their parents from different regions in Central America in order to attend school in the United States. I also get to work with students needing literacy intervention and enrichment services.
I see students in 45 minute-1 hour groups during the pull-out intervention and enrichment blocks for RTI (Response-to-Intervention) and ESL classes. I have also started an after-school Drama Club for my students. They love learning to read, engaging in STEM activities, and showing their creativity like many of the famous artists we study. More time spent engaged with enjoyable literacy tasks that are matched to their individual learning needs is key to their academic and personal success.
My Project
Each day my primary grade students show up to school and prove they are smarter today than they were yesterday. They work hard and develop each day into more proficient readers. Each day I ask them to practice their growth mindset and celebrate their successes no matter what they are.
This project will help me transform my classroom into a life size version of the children's classic board game Candy Land in order to help celebrate their growth as readers.
The decorative bulletin board candy pieces and photography back drop will help me create interactive learning spaces within our classroom that will help my students step into the game as they practice reading challenges related to the current unit of study. The game like atmosphere will help them practice ELA standards in a low risk way while helping them see the learning they have done this year.
