My Students

I serve students in grade three in a special education resource room who have a variety of disabilities ranging from Specific Learning Disabilities to Other Health Impairments such as ADHD and Emotional Disabilities. All students have difficulties with attention and focus in the mainstream classroom due to difficulties with sensory processing, delays in academic ability and emotional difficulties. Our students come from a variety of cultural backgrounds and many are refugee immigrants. Nearly one hundred percent of our student population lives in poverty.

This year I am serving students who are emergent readers.

It is a challenge to find texts that are engaging and accessible to them as readers.

My Project

Theodor Seuss Geisel AKA Dr. Seuss wrote books that children enjoy reading. He created characters like the cat in the hat to engage with the younger reader and to teach them to have fun. Motivating young children to read is a challenge today in the wake of technology which is easily available and very engaging. I have found that the books that my students reach for over and over again are the few that I have by Dr. Seuss. They are worn out, and falling apart and the students have fun when they are reading them. The rhyming helps teach phonemic awareness and the whimsical nature keeps them engaged.
