Present day kindergarten is definitely NOT the kindergarten of the past. I remember my kindergarten experience in pieces of memories, mostly learning letters with "Letter People", coloring, playing at recess, and going home before lunch.
Our kindergarten classroom looks much different than these memories.
My students not only are expected to know their letters at the end of the year but also to be able to read! Kindergarten classes no longer focus on play-based activities but academics. My class of 20 5-6 year old children spend about 5 1/2 solid hours at school focusing on academics. We have two breaks a day for play, one half hour recess and about 20 minutes of "choice time" at the end of the day.
Naturally, my students are curious and love to learn new things. I want to foster this enthusiasm by creating an environment that inspires them, helps them feel safe, and excites their imaginations.
My Project
I specifically chose materials in this project to target special reading needs of my students. For example, the small pop up tent will help me create a reading space in my classroom that students will want to go to to read quietly on their own. Students are highly motivated by special, cozy places they can go to as an incentive. We already have one double seated camping chair, and it was a big hit with students this year. A second camping chair will allow all students doing the buddy reading station to be able to use camping chairs to read with their buddy. This will help eliminate conflict and allow students to get started right away on their stations. The bins are for book storage. Our current bins take up a lot of space because they are mismatched. Having a full set of book storage that matches in size will allow me to make better use of our space for our classroom library. This project is essentially a part two to one of my previous reading projects that will allow me to expand space for students and make their reading experience in the classroom even more meaningful.
