I teach in a small rural elementary school in which 61% of the children are economically disadvantaged. This is my second year of teaching. I am excited to provide many opportunities for my students to learn and grow as individuals and members of society. I hope to make a positive impact on my students as my teachers had on me.
My students enjoy hands-on activities and using technology.
My school ranges from PreK to 5th grade. I teach in a self-contained, 4th-grade classroom teaching students from various backgrounds. I hope to be able to provide them with opportunities that will foster their love for learning.
My Project
In my classroom, I value reading as part of an invaluable learning experience. I make time every day for students to read independently to grow in their comprehension and vocabulary skills. What if I could use this time to make ALL students excited to read? Based on stories from other colleagues and blogs that I have read, students love to do something called "Flashlight Friday."
One of my students mentioned, "my sister learned to love reading by reading under a flashlight; I think I would learn to love reading too if we could do that!"
I want to be able to provide that opportunity for my students to love learning without really noticing it. With this being my second year teaching, my classroom library is not as large as I hope for it to be someday. Through this project, my classroom library would expand giving students a variety of books to choose from. Due to being from a low-income school, most of my students would not be able to bring in a flashlight to participate in such a fun activity. I want this to be an opportunity for all students. We would benefit from your support to make this dream a reality. Thank you!
