The students I teach are from a low socio-economic community. We have a very diverse population with approximately 1/3 of our population being white, 1/3 black and 1/3 Hispanic. Our district is 100% free and reduced lunch. The students I teach in 5th grade generally range from 1st grade to 9th grade level readers. Many of my students come from homes where they only have one parent present and others live with extended family.
I truly love my students and their love of books!
I can't wait to see their excitement with new books of diversity!
Through Diversity Training, I have come to the realization that students need to read books that they can identify with and see themselves in. The books in my DonorsChoose.org project are just that. My students are from a diverse population and will benefit from the identity lessons these books teach, as well as love seeing themselves in the books.
Students love to read books with characters like them.
Seeing books with pictures that look like them or their family members will make them want to read the book. Whether they read the book themselves or I read it aloud to the class in my Picture Book A Day, they will love the book.
