I am a third grade teacher at Beethoven Elementary School located on the south side of Chicago. This is a Chicago Public School where ninety-nine percent of the students are low-income. All of the students in my class receive free lunch. As a first year teacher, I am working on creating a classroom library that is inviting to my students. I want my students to see that a whole new world will open up for them when they read. For many of my students, school is their only opportunity to read. I am hoping to change this. I want to show them that reading is not only a school activity. Reading can be enjoyable anywhere! I would like to create a section of books in our library that is meant for my students to check out overnight. Many of my students do not have books available to them outside of school. I want to show them that I trust them to check out books, read them at home, and return them back to the class library. This will help my students take ownership of our library. My students often ask me for books by authors they have enjoyed reading or listening to. For example, I read a book by Patricia Polacco as a read aloud. Many of my students enjoyed the book so much that they were asking to read more of her books. I would have loved to provide them with that opportunity, but I did not have any other books written by her. I would like to build up my author collections and provide my students with the books they deserve.
