As a teacher in a low-income school district, my students are faced with several challenges both in and out of the classroom. Despite the many challenges they face, my students come to school each day with a willingness to learn.
My students are creative, inquisitive, and determined .
They love to express themselves through art, and look for ways to learn that are more challenging and rigorous. From the moment they walk through my classroom door I focus on their potential and growth and I want them all to feel successful in their own unique way.
My Project
My district has not purchased a new reading series in over 10 years and in that time education and expectations of teaching have changed as well. We don't just teach from the book anymore because we know that is not how we bring education to life in our classrooms. Our reading series does not meet the rigor needed for my students to be successful learners.
It is through the novels that I am requesting that I will be able to bring the needed rigor to my students reading lessons each day.
While reading "Bud, Not Buddy" my students will not only be able to bring in some of their prior learning from social studies but they will also be able to learn about figurative language, word choice, theme, and how to write a literary argument essay. With "Dragonwings" students will have the opportunity to learn about point of view and how an author's perspective impacts the content of their writing. They will also be able to compare the information they will read in nonfiction text to that of what they are reading in this novel. Lastly with "Frightful's Mountain" the students will learn how to cite evidence and draw inferences. They will learn about interactions between humans and the natural world, and character development. In the end they will use what what they have learned and the evidence they have found to write an evidence based claim about the harmful effects of DDT.
My goal is to take learning and reading beyond the textbook and teach students skills they need to become successful readers and life long learners. By having a class set of the novels I can ensure each child will be actively engaged and being held accountable for their learning
