My Students

I am a first grade teacher at a Title I school with 70% free and reduced lunch. My students need CD players so they can listen to books.

My students come from a variety of backgrounds including second language students from Central and South America, Africa, and Eastern Europe, mixed families, single parent families, and kids dealing with homelessness and various traumas.

Despite the differences in their backgrounds and abilities, all of my students have the same desire to learn.

My Project

Students who are learning to read need to hear many many books read aloud. Listening to narrated stories while they follow along in the book helps beginning readers better understand the structure of stories, what correct grammar sounds like, and helps kids develop better expression.

Listening to stories helps to develop a love of reading.

My students use the disk-mans to listen to books, independently, at different times of the day. This is a favorite activity used by about half of my class every day. Unfortunately, little hands are not always able to be as careful with equipment as needed. This means replacements are needed every couple years. We are requesting 6 new personal CD players.
