Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My kindergarten students are eager to learn. They are enthusiastic learners who come from different backgrounds. My 26 kindergarteners are energetic and enjoy moving around. They love our literacy wall (where we learn phonological awareness in order to bridge into reading) and our read-alouds. They enjoy math and are catching number sense. They are thrilled with our Fun Fridays (one week we explored pumpkins using our five senses, and another week we explored tools and how they are able to help us)!
Just a couple of months into the school year and my students are becoming friends, having fun, and enjoying learning together.
They are learning each others personalities and adjusting accordingly. I am amazed at how compassionate my little 5-year-olds can be!
My Project
My project's ultimate goal is to transform my kindergarteners into readers and lifelong learners by sending them bags filled with books to read at home. They will bring their reading bags home and enjoy them for a week. They will return the book bags the next week and exchange them for a new one!
Not only will this project promote literacy, it will also help with family engagement and parental involvement because the bags are going to be filled with a journal and suggested activities for parents and family members.
A study has found that by the time they enter kindergarten there is a "million word gap" (words children are exposed to) between children who are not read to and those who are read to with five books a day. I would like to give my students' parents the resources to read with their children daily.
Because the books will change weekly, this will consistently engage our families in their children's learning throughout the school year. We already have a baseline of students' reading success probability and will measure again in the middle and at the end of the school year. Along with the work we do in the classroom, this project will increase my students' love for reading as well as make it easier for their parents to support them daily at home. This project can spread a love of reading not just in my classroom this year but in the years to come.
