My classroom is made up of an exceptional and diverse group of kids. Within our school district, one hundred and three languages are spoken, and, when you look into my classroom, you can see the diversity. Not only are we culturally diverse, but the students come into my classroom with very different academic levels. Our school is located in a suburb of Detroit with a portion of our students receiving free or reduced price lunches.
After teaching Kindergarten for 12 years, I am noticing a change in how students learn.
It has always been my job to create lifelong learners, and, just because the students are older, my job has not changed. In order to do that, I must make learning fun, challenge each child and develop learners who are curious and thirsty for knowledge.
"Sitting still is overrated. It makes sense for the opera or for meditating, but in most classrooms and child care centers, it's given far more honor than it deserves. Children need to move." ~Tom Hunter, National Association for the Education of Young Children.
My Project
I need to feed my students' hunger and excitement for reading. In Kindergarten, it is important to start with basic books and most of the time, these books are hard to find and parents do not have them at home. We know that when students read a variety of books at their individual levels that they can become successful readers. These book bags will provide students with the opportunity to take home books at their level as often as they like. The bags will provide students with a way to organize and take care of their books.
This take home book bag project will get my students excited about reading outside of school!
In the process, students will be improving their reading abilities which will make them all feel more successful. My hope is that this experience will instill for my students a true love of reading.
