Help me give my students a 4 C's Reading Bag that focuses on bringing Communication, Collaboration, Critical Thinking, and Creativity to their home! Together let's promote family engagement with books and activities.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
Hey everyone, I am new to the school and district. My school is a newly, built STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math) school and we are working to create a collaborative environment for our learners.
Second grade is a wonderful grade because students are still so eager to come to school and to learn.
I think back to my elementary experiences and the most memorable ones, are the times I felt like I was apart of a community. That is why I want to give my students the opportunity to have an interactive, collaborative classroom environment! Not only this, but I want to provide them with the materials they need to be 21st century learners at school and at home.
My Project
Once a month students will take home a 4 C’s Reading bag. Inside of the bag, students will have a variety of texts and QR Codes to read and watch videos on someone famous in history. Along with the book, students will have hands-on engaging family activities to do for that month... like build model planes, try space food, calculate their weight in space, and more! For that month students dive deep into skills that require them to collaborate, communicate, create, and critically think as a family. Throughout the month students are fact tracking and reflecting on their graphic organizers all about what they’ve learned on this person in history. At the end of the month, students bring back their bag and either share in person, through video, or pictures with an essay just how much their family learned in this process. Then, after their bag is returned with all the materials, the process starts over again the next month. This allows students to learn how to research and communicate, two standards that arch across many grade levels. Using a rubric I will be able to grade and track student progress throughout the year.
