Reading at Home, Online, and Maybe in School Again Soon!
Help me give my students keep books. My book cart is temporarily shut down with our schools being closed, so I've moved to You Tube. One day, we'll be back though, and these will help us keep going!
I have a unique role in our school, supporting students from 4K through 5th grade who speak more than one than language. I get to help translate and interpret between Spanish and English, but also do my best to support families who speak languages I do not know.
My students are spread across all grade levels of our school and speak over 20 different languages in their homes.
As the population of students changes and grows, I am hoping to get some support to help me keep up.
My Project
For years, I've been running a home literacy program by providing books in Spanish, Arabic, Hebrew and German to some of my multilingual students. With our schools closed, I'm not moving books to the playground at the moment, but am going through the Spanish section pretty quickly with online videos for the students.
When our school opens up again, we're going to need some new books in Spanish.
I'm making a list of what books I've recorded that kiddos and families are loving, and will probably be checked out a lot, and others that go along with the favorites that seem to popping up.
There's a lot of uncertainty right now, but I appreciate your support in keeping reading and books as a constant for those I serve. I'm running through books that you've already gotten for us, 2-3 a day, and the students are loving them. I hope that we can continue to read together, either online, or by having the students touch the actual books again soon!
