Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Do you remember the first day of first grade? My students are in that special place of just entering elementary school, and they are excited to get reading!
The student body at our school is very diverse.
Many are immigrants and many come from low-income families living in high-poverty areas of the city. My students face challenges every day, especially in our virtual learning environment. Many of my students do not have access to books right now, and this project will help them start and grow their libraries at home.
My Project
Giving my students books to read at home will help them in so many ways. They will be able to read independently, interacting with texts that are at their academic level. With this ability, they will gain confidence and familiarity with text. This will help them progress with the difficult task of learning to read, which is even more difficult to do via virtual learning. Many of my students' families are not able to buy books for their children right now, and I want to make sure this doesn't stop them from learning to read.
