Reading can open gateways to knowledge, can lower the drawbridge to the imagination, and can serve as inspiration in our lives. I am a first year teacher in a 5/6 combination class in a high poverty area. Many of my students are English Language Learners who are developing their English language and vocabulary.
What I am asking for is books for a classroom library. Sadly, as a first year teacher, I have found that most of the books in my classroom library are books from yard sales and are seriously outdated. In order for students to learn from and be inspired by what they are reading, it needs to be interesting and engaging for them. Unfortunately, most of my students have difficulty relating to the "old" books in my classroom library. This is why they would benefit so greatly from new books.
The books would be books they can relate to, encouraging them to read more, and thus become lifelong readers. It is important to me to have books that the students are interested in, because I truly feel that this is when they learn most. Please consider funding this project. It would be greatly appreciated by myself and my students.
