I teach a group of very diverse second graders who love reading. They love to read a mixture of fiction and non-fiction books. We are in a Title I school and many of my students are English Language Learners (ELL). Despite the challenges many of my students face in their daily lives, they love to learn and frequently ask to take home books to show off their growing literacy to their parents.
My parents want to help their children learn to read but many of my parents do not speak English themselves.
Help them read books in Spanish so they can all be included.
My students check out books from my classroom library to read in the classroom and to read at home with their parent or an older sibling each night. I have a good selection of English-language books for students to choose from but only have a few Spanish-language books for my ELL students and their families to read.
My students love reading with their families so much that they have read all of my very limited selection of Spanish-language books in my classroom!
I need help to build a good selection of books that will help my ELL students stay excited about, and engaged with, reading books!
