Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach all subjects to 33 students in a fourth grade classroom at a Title I school in East San Jose, California. The majority of our students are English Language Learners.
This year, only two of my students entered fourth grade reading at the proficient level for third grade. One of my major challenges as a teacher has been finding a way to make reading engaging and successful for my students, especially those who have struggled with reading throughout their schooling.
The goal of the "Reading around our Room" proposal is to improve our class' reading comprehension skills by using a self-directed, engaging approach. The reading program we currently teach does not allow for our students to read novels; since the level of the text is often above my students' reading level, teaching skills such as inference, cause and effect, and main idea can be difficult. If I could provide each of my students with a copy of a high-interest book, I could design centers to accompany each of these comprehension skills. Imagine a whole-class form of literature circles where students have the opportunity to choose skill-based, creative projects to work on independently. This project would take place over a month-long period, and students would work on their reading and analysis for about an hour each day.
I cannot emphasize enough how essential the opportunity to critically read novels is to enhancing my students' love of reading as well as their mastery. Funding would provide each of my students with a copy of the book "Sideways Stories from Wayside School".
My students are bright, beautiful, and inquisitive. A lifelong love for reading constitutes an enormous asset for any child. Given the challenges my students face, developing this passion will enable them to continue to achieve academically and increase their options for exploring the world and using the many gifts they possess.
