Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Every September, my heart is filled with joy to see all the incoming first graders ready to begin our year long journey. What I love about my students is the diversity of families that I get the honor to work with every year. We have students from different backgrounds, races, cultures and economical status. I have students who speak multiple languages as well as students who are just learning English. Every year is different but I am always looking for ways to enhance my teaching to be able to meet all of my students' needs.
My Project
Our school has adapted the Workshop model for Reading and Writing the past few years. We have had some amazing professional development from an outside agency that has helped us create units of study with grade specific goals. They have also helped by creating and modeling mini lessons, student conferences and strategy groups. Every year we focus on something different and I believe that we are all starting to master the workshop model in our own way.
As confident as I feel every time we meet with our coaches, I still struggle to find the appropriate reading and writing strategies to challenge my students needs during guided reading.
I see myself using the same comfortable strategies that I have learned through our professional development but I know they are many more. With these two text books I believe that I will be able to use a larger variety of to strategies to challenge my students.
