Reading and Writing Workshop Space

My students need supplies to create a dedicated reading writing workshop space.

My Students

My students are hard working suburban kids that love learning and being creative. They have a natural attraction to all things technology and enjoy learning using computers. My students love when our class gets to go to the computer lab, but finding time to fit it in is often difficult.

My students are motivated to learn 21st century skills and would love the chance to have access to more technology.

They learn best with their personal learning styles are taken into consideration.

My Project

My students will use these supplies to create a corner of our classroom for reading and writing workshop. Students will read independently then respond to their reading in ways they choose themselves.

The Kwame Alexander books and comfy couch will allow students to get comfortable while they read and respond to poetry found in the novels.

The pens and paper will give students supplies to record their thinking and give them options on how they choose to respond to their reading. They might like to work with others to create a poster using the post-it posters. They might like to create a journal entry using the astrobrights paper, colorful pens and Sharpies. The glue could be used to create a scrapbook page summarizing the novel or a collage of a character's traits. I want to post student work in the reading and writing area as well so we will need some tape to attach the creations to our walls for the whole class to see.

The professional development texts will help me as a teacher better meet the needs of my students. I plan to meet with my students individually in the new reading and writing workshop space to conference. Grammar Keepers is a text that will help me learn to incorporate individual grammar instruction with my small groups. I will learn to evaluate the student work for individual grammar needs of each student and keep track of goals each student is working on. Disrupting Thinking is full of new ideas and ways for students to respond to text.

Since readers will be working independently in the new reading workshop area I want to learn new options for students to show me what they are learning.
