Our elementary school is a diverse school in an urban community that serves students from many backgrounds. Each child brings with him or her unique strengths and needs. They are inquisitive and enthusiastic, and come to school ready to learn every day!
Third grade is a key year in students' literacy learning.
During this time, students make a transition from "learning to read" to "reading to learn." More books become accessible to fluent readers, increasing confidence in one's writing helps improve the communication of ideas, and students blossom as literacy learners.
My Project
I am requesting the Lucy Calkins Units of Study for both reading and writing. These units are grounded in research-based practices and are standards-aligned to help students be successful in their learning. I will use these units to create lessons for my students to help push their thinking about what they read, and to improve their writing.
These units are designed to inspire children to be lifelong readers and writers.
Rather than focusing on textbooks, the lessons revolve around real, engaging books that inspire children to read more and across a range of genres. In writing, students write with a purpose across narrative, informational, and persuasive genres, rather than responding to prompts.
Your donation will help provide engaging, meaningful instruction to my eager readers and writers. Thank you for all you do for children!
