As a teacher in a transient and low-income elementary school, I see the students in my classroom thrive on predictability! They need to know what is happening at all times throughout their school day in order to eliminate the anxiety and apprehension of what is around the corner. My students face many challenges both in and out of the classroom and need a safe space to be true to themselves without judgement and added responsibility. With the appropriate tools, they are able to step through the classroom doors eager to begin their school day and ready to learn.
When I hear the words, "I did it" come out of my students' mouths, I can't help but smile.
Each child is celebrated for their individual achievements and encouraged during challenging moments. As a class, we work together to develop a common language and consistent expectations to ensure everyone is on the same page. The students in my classroom have a Cognitive Impairment or Autism and fostering their independence is key to their growth both socially and academically.
My Project
With such a wide range of academic and social needs within my classroom, it can be challenging to differentiate lesson materials to ensure each student's needs are being met, but it has to be done! Some students are working on letter recognition while others are developing their sight word knowledge (Pop for Sight Words), rhyming (Rhyme & Sort Rockets), and story sequencing (Tall Tales Story Telling). The materials I selected for this projected were specifically tailored for my students' individual educational goals.
Even though the needs in my classroom are so vast, there is one consistent aspect: ALL students, Kindergarten through 5th grade, know how to play!

These materials will provide my students the opportunity to engage in interactive, hands-on games which will expand their oral language, comprehension, letter/sound recognition, and sight word knowledge. While my students are always working on improving their literacy development, they are also working on their social growth. One of the selected games, (My Feelings Game), will allow my students to practice turn-taking, problem solving, and self-regulation techniques through play.
I have seen how play has impacted the social and academic growth of my students in such a positive way, and would love the opportunity to expand on this success!
