Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Remember sneezing over chalk dust? My students do, because they do not have whiteboards with colorful markers and magnetic powers allowing them to play with letters and words. While many schools upgrade to digital Smartboards, I hope my kids can have the whiteboards that our reading program expects.
My students are in Kindergarten through Fourth Grade.
They are the students most in need of the very best that education has to offer. They live in a lower income, urban community in North Central Massachusetts. Many are first generation Americans or have recently immigrated here. All are the students who are at high risk of losing their potential, as they are the students who are reading significantly below grade level. Despite these challenges, they love books. They love learning how our spelling system works. They love seeing their efforts pay-off with higher reading rates. They love sharing their writing with their classmates. They love to learn and deserve to have the opportunity to access a curriculum which is just out of their reach without intervention.
My Project
These resources will make a great difference in my ability to teach my students, and in their engagement in our lessons. There are few things more enticing to an elementary student than the allure of writing on a white board. Right now, my kindergarten and first graders have only an old green chalkboard, several decades older than I am. My second, third and fourth grade students don't even have this resource available when I see them in small corners in their classrooms. All of our literacy intervention programs are designed for classrooms with advanced technologies and I am hoping, with your generous help, to start catching up. There are also several books and manipulatives for each student to use, and valuable teaching time is wasted running up and down flights of stairs to gather materials between classes. The workstation will allow me to efficiently move from room to room with all needed items and no wasted time. For my students, every minute counts!

My students will gain more learning time, and more out of that time. The end goal will be students meeting their goals, reaching benchmarks, and moving forward in their academic careers as confident readers and effective writers. Once they are able to read and write well, there is no door that will be closed to them ever again.
