I teach in a high need community. This is my first year as a first grade teacher. For my first three years I taught an advanced second grade class. In our community, located in North Carolina, a lot of our area has been devastated by the loss of the furniture industry. Our state has also gone through severe budget cuts to the educational system. Our students are the ones who are suffering. Being a new teacher I want my students to have all the resources that I've seen provided at other schools, but I am unable to financially fulfill these needs without some help. Unfortunately our community is not at a place right now to be of assistance.
I know that the key to a successful life is a strong foundation. Without reading and writing a child is severely crippled in our world. This easel would be the sun for our shared reading and writing time. This is the part of the day where literature comes alive for my students. Our school has a high ESL and free or reduced lunch population. Because of the environments that they come from literature and writing are not placed with high importance at home.
An easel would allow me to share big books more easily. It would allow the books to be at a level where the students could interact with the stories. The easel would also get used during writing time. One of my favorite activities is to write the first line of a story then each student has to come up with one sentence to add to our story. The easel would allow the white board to be at a level that a student could reach it so they could actually write the sentence themselves. This would allow for more teachable moments. I could easily guide students on sentence writing.
I am sure at some point in your educational career you recall sitting on a carpet with the teacher reading a story, and you probably remember her using an easel.
