BMS is a 5th and 6th grade campus in a rural community. There are about 520 students enrolled at the middle school, and approximately 55% of those students are from low-income households. My students are 5th and 6th grade students who struggle with reading and writing skills.
The students in my resource language arts class work hard to learn reading and writing, and they would greatly benefit from learning centers which allow them to practice language arts skills in small groups.
When skills are taught in the classroom, students who practice those skills can master them, but as new skills are taught, old skills are often forgotten. I would like to purchase reading and writing learning centers so my students can continually practice language arts skills.
My Project
Students enjoy the liberty of moving from their usual seats and working with their classmates. Reading and writing centers will provide my students with the opportunity to help one another learn and practice basic literacy skills. Centers also assist in team building and social skills in students.
Literacy centers will help me individualize classroom instruction.
Students in special education classrooms have individual goals and expectations. Literacy centers will allow some students work together in centers while other students work in a small group or individually with the teacher. Because all students learn at different rates and have various strengths and weaknesses, student-led literacy centers are essential to assisting students who struggle to learn.
