My Students

It's that time of year when I start getting excited for a whole new group of incredible students. August is when I start thinking about the new year ahead and all of the possibilities and growth that awaits us.

In first grade, reading and writing are our most important and challenging subjects.

Having a great foundation in these areas can really make a difference in the years to come. Connecting reading and writing to the real world can make learning easier and more engaging for students. Many of our families (55%) are in need of financial help and assistance. As standards have increased in academic rigor, many of our students come into first grade working below grade level expectations. It is so important that we do everything that we can to make sure that all of our kids have the opportunity to grow, create, learn, and succeed regardless of their starting level. This is where we need your help.

My Project

As I get ready to begin my 33rd year teaching first graders, I am as excited as I was for my very first year. Having the opportunity to help another group of students discover the joy of literacy is such an amazing privilege. My students deserve the best start I can give them and these materials will help us achieve our goals.

Unlocking the magic of reading and writing is the most special and important aspect of first grade!

As the demands on young learners have increased, so has the need to integrate our learning. The materials that I'm requesting will allow us to connect reading, writing, science, social studies and art in a real-world way that is engaging, fun and challenging. Scholastic News magazines will bring us quality, non-fiction reading and experiences from around the world. The Draw & Write Journals will give us a space to write and draw about the real world we live in, and the special people colors crayons and pencils will allow each table group to have access to the many colors that represent all of us. My school is made up of children from all over the world, speaking nearly 30 languages, with many different, beautiful skin colors. I want every student to be able to find "their perfect match".

Thank you so much for considering this project. With your help, my students will SOAR.
