My students and athletes are in 7th through 9th grade. They are 12 through 15 year olds. They are passionate for things they care about but also lose interest in things they don't gravitate to. I teach many special education students as well as high functioning students.
I teach a wide range of students from all walks of life with varying abilites and needs.
The socioeconomic status of my students ranges from some living in affluent neighborhoods while other families struggle economically. We also have a wide range of ethnic backgrounds including White, Polynesian, Asian, Hispanic and African American.
My Project
I used to have an extra computer in my room so that students could work on their assignments and be able to print off their work. That computer was needed by the administration for other uses, so it was removed from my classroom. However, it was very helpful for the students to get their work done. I currently teach 180 students a semester, so if I received this laptop, that would help 360 students have access to a laptop each year. Furthermore, since the laptop would be mobile, it would be very easy to use it in other areas of the school as we do computer work in other areas of the school.
Slavery and America's expansion west, are two of the most extensive units that I teach in my U.S.
History classes. I am requesting for some resources that will help capture the students' attention and interest into these historical events. Along with the ability for students to use the computer for research, I would like to purchase the DVD, "The Men who Built America", which is a new publication with current information and excellent illustrations of America's western expansion. Along with the DVD, I am also asking for 12 reading books titled, "In the Shadow of Liberty, the hidden history of slavery, four presidents and five black lives". This book is about four of America's founding fathers and the slaves that they owned. This book will be added to the selection of books I presently have students choose to read for research projects.
All the items that I have requested will greatly impact my students. It will help them obtain information easier and help them to learn and appreciate U.S. History. Thank you.
